Tutorial about visual marketing techniques.
Last years many companies developed different strategies to create the best way to advertise. Computers, and especially the internet, are directly involved. On the internet it’s easy to spread a commercial to places all over the world without going to there. There are many people who think that they can make a chance in the world of advertising. Thed Lensen, director of the Spotzer Media Group, started to produce commercials which can be bought or rent by a company who personalises that video before it’s getting ‘on air’. Those ready-to-air commercials are made for every company.
Ready-to-air video commercials can be used on television screens, websites, narrow casting networks[1], cell phones and other mobile devices like mp3 players. Another cheap way for digital advertising is to turn your existing screens into interactive message boards. Different shops in the world can use their television screen as a commercial display. In Holland many bookshops, like Bruna, are using this strategy to promote a book or to show the top-5 list of the week.
Sometimes all the commercials are getting too much. Have you ever surfed on the internet last year without getting confronted with online commercials? Probably not! There are many ways to hide the pop-ups, but you will always see other commercials in another corner of the website. Nowadays many people write their own weblog[2] with stories they want to share with the world or a certain group on the internet. To impress the readers of a weblog, people can put videos into it. Many websites already carry video advertising and in the next few years there will be more and more, even in and around other video content.

Group Profile
Group profile
We are four students from the institute for media and information management. Our group name is Cv203C2. Here’s a little introduction about everyone.
The first group member is Claudia Nieweg da Silva Marcos.Claudia is twenty years old, born in Lisbon, Portugal and is currently living in Amsterdam. She spent her childhood in Muiderberg living with her mother and their dog Mo. After high school she went to Sicily, to work as a volunteer at a school for poor children. She spent nine months in Palermo working on this project. When the project was done, she came back to Holland to study communications. Now she is a second year student at the institute for media and information management. When she has finished her study she wants to get a master degree in communications in San Francisco. And after that her dream is to move to Italy and work as head of PR for a clothing brand like D&G.
The second group member is Rogier Scheick. Rogier is nineteen and also a student at institute for media and information management.Last year he chose Advertising, Marketing & Communication, that’s one of the five options in the second year for graduation. Before he started this study he was on a secondary school in Groenlo, in the eastern part of this country. He used to go to school and hang around with his friends. Groenlo is a small city with 11 thousand inhabitants. Rogier’s parents are still living there with his little sister. His other sisters moved to Deventer and Groningen. Rogier really wanted to move to Amsterdam, because he thinks it’s a beautiful city with an exciting atmosphere where every day is different from another day. But it was hard to find a room in Amsterdam, that’s why Rogier’s dad bought him a house. Now he’s living in Amsterdam with two girls in an apartment near to the institute.
The third group member is Rick Slaathuis. Rick is twenty years old. He’s born in Oostmarsum, a small city next to the German boarder, in the east of Holland. After high school he went to the Saxion College in Enschede. There he followed the education Intergrale Veiligheidskunde. But Rick found out that this study wasn’t what he wanted to do, so he stopped. Now he’s a second year student at the institute for media and information management and enjoys it.Rick currently lives in Amsterdam and he really likes the city and ofcourse the nightlife. After this study he wants to get a master degree in marketing strategy, communications and likes to live the next few years in Amsterdam. Rick has one dream and that is: to have an own business, to become a good father and staying healthy for the rest of his life.
The last but not least member of the group is Kimberly Vegting. Kimberly is twenty years old and born in Almere. She spent her childhood in Amsterdam and Almere and loves both of city’s. After high school Kimberly went to study Facility Management at the college Inholland in Diemen-Zuid. After two semesters Kimberly quit her study because she didn’t like the study and wanted some time for herself and work for one year. Everyone thought Kimberly wouldn’t go back to school but she did and now she a second year student at institute for media and information management and doing very well. After this study she wants to go to a foreign country to study at a university and get a master degree in communications. She prefers Australia but if it is in another country she’s fine with that. She just wants to see the world.
Together with these four ambitious but very different people, we work on the project O’Neill campaign.
O’Neill is one of the largest brand in surf and snowboard sportswear and accessories. O’Neill also sells clothes but mainly men buy them. But O’Neill also wants to sell clothes to women and especially girls. They made a summer collection and the target is to sell the products to girls between the age of seventeen till twenty. But the question is: how do we reach those girls?
So O’Neill wants us to make an advertising campaign to attract girls in the age of seventeen-twenty. First we need to do research about what they are interested in, which brands they go for, where they party, where they shop etcetera. When al of those thing are explored, then we can start thinking about a way to reach the girls.
The second problem that O’Neill has is that they got a website and a TV show called O’Neill TV. But the website and the show don’t seem to reach the targetgroup. We have to find a way to make both these objects attractive to girls from the age of seventeen till twenty but also for others visitors.
All the research is being analysed and processed and in the end we will make a recommendation to O’Neill and give a presentation at the head-office on 30 October in Warmond, Holland.

Timing
The meeting discussed different items. First item to discuss was timing. How did each member think about deadlines? Claudia and Rick thought that deadlines were necessary. Kimberly and Rogier thought that deadlines could be useful, but they should be flexible. We decided to create deadlines with a spare time of two days.
Meetings
Rick and Claudia said that meetings should be hold, unless if they’re good chaired. Otherwise there shouldn’t be enough communication. Rogier and Kimberly thought that meetings shouldn’t be hold officially each week. Rogier thought that communication could be done by e-mail. Reports
We all agreed that the reports must be written in perfect Dutch or perfect English. Sentences have to be short, but detailed. Minutes should always be taken.Hierarchy
Rogier and Kimberly thought that a leader should be good. Claudia and Rick said that working on a project is a teameffort, so everyone is equal. 7. Action plan:
To improve relationships in the project we made the following plans:
- We should create deadlines with a spare time of two days.
- Meetings should be hold, but they have to be flexible. Minutes should be taken each meeting.
- Reports should be written in perfect Dutch or English. Sentences have to be short, but detailed.
- We concluded that there’s no hierarchy in our group. We are all equal, because we’re all working on the same project.
8. AOB:
Nothing came up for discussion.
9. The chair thanked everybody present for their contributions to the discussions and closed the meeting at 10.45 a.m.

How to improve the world of advertising
In the past couple of years, many companies developed different strategies to create the best way to advertise. Computers, and especially the internet, are directly involved. On the internet it’s easy to spread a commercial to places all over the world without going to there. This technique can also be used in collective narrow casting networks. [1]
There are many people who think that they can make a chance in the world of advertising. Thed Lensen, director of the Spotzer Media Group, started to produce commercials without knowing for which company. These commercials can be bought or rent by a company who personalises that video before it’s getting ‘on air’. This ready-to-air commercials are made for every company in the world that doesn’t have enough money or time to produce their own video commercials.
Ready-to-air video commercials can be used on television screens, websites, cell phones and other mobile devices like mp3 players. Another cheap way for digital advertising is to turn your existing screens into interactive message boards. This is called narrow casting. Different shops in the world can use their television screen as a commercial display. In Holland many bookshops, like Bruna, are using this strategy to promote a book or to show the top-5 list of the week.
About five years ago, some Dutch marketing managers launched the company SpinAwards. This company collects and receives each year a lot of online commercials and online campaigns. The SpinAwards are prices for the best online campaign, best mobile concept, most innovative concept, best website concept and the best gaming concept. The company SpinAwards is an independent company. They think that if you, as an art-director, can win an award the quality of the ideas are getting higher. The better the ideas, the more effective they are. Sometimes all the commercials are getting too much. Have you ever surfed on the internet last year without getting confronted with online commercials? Probably not! There are many ways to hide the pop-ups, but you will always see commercials in the corners, in the header or in the bottom of the website. Nowadays many people write their own weblogs[2] with stories they want to share with the world or a certain group on the internet. To impress the readers of a weblog, people can put videos into it. Narrow casting networks are spread all over the world. It’s a cheap way to advertise and it’s an easy way to broadcast your own commercials in the environment of the products target group. Many websites already carry video advertising. In the next few years there will be more and more, even in and around other video content.

Article version 2 by Kimberly V.
Second version of In-game advertising by Kimberly V. from CV203C2
Date: 14-10-2007
In-game advertising is getting more popular
In-game advertising
Advertising isn’t limited to billboards or posters. Your advertising can be integrated into a game, to interact with your customers. There are three kinds of in-game advertising. I will explain all of them.
As an object in the game
That means that your product is being used in the game. For example, if O’Neill wants to do in-game advertising as object in a game they can advertise in a surf- or snowboarding game. Products from the O’Neill collection will be used. Like in a surf game they can use the new summer collection to dress the players.
Like in the real world
Another kind of in-game advertising is advertising in a game like you do in the real world. That means that the brand O’Neill is written on a surfboard, on a billboard, sponsoring events. For example this kind of in-game advertising is being used in the program ‘Second Life’. Second Life is a game where every brand or company can advertise. You can wear clothes from O’Neill and you can work at a bank or café. So Second Life is a 3d virtual world and created by online players. Since the game is open for players and advertisers it’s grown explosively and today played by millions of players from around the globe. (second life, 2007)
Fun game
The third kind of in-game advertising is having a game on your companies website. It’s just a game for fun. The game isn’t made for your own company, but is made to promote your website and to let visitors remember your website. A great example is the campaign from Achmea. It wasn’t really a game but a video you could sent to everyone to make them feel better! You can let the character in the video call your friends by name and tell them a personal message.
Companies
There are a few companies who are working with in-game advertising. IGA Worldgroup and AdsNGames are the biggest right now and they are expanding quickly. IGA is specialized in the first kind of in-game advertising, in a game. Their first campaign was in the game Counter Strike and it immediately got popular. AdsNGames is specialized in the third kind of in-game advertising, a fun game. It boost your sites appeal with casual games. (Hotfrog, 2007)
Future
In-game advertising is getting more and more popular but it is still a very new field for all participants. It requires a lot of research but eventually it will pay off. Many gamers already recognize that it’s getting popular, because game developers are spending more money to bringt in-game advertising to a higher level.
